THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL Friday, January 17, 2003 B3 Former City Council leader Gwen Awsumb dies By Bill Dries Gwen Awsumb held the highest political office any woman had ever achieved in Memphis politics when she became chairman of the City Council in 1970. Political pundits of the day wondered aloud how a woman would survive the city's tough and often personal politics. But Mrs. Awsumb held her own in the limelight and became an icon for women drawn to local politics. Mrs.

Mrs. Awsumb moved with her family to Memphis from Marshall, when she was 15. She was a Gwen graduate of St.

Awsumb Mary's Episcopal School and Rhodes College, which was then Southwestern at Memphis. Politics was not foreign to her. Her father, Carl A. Robinson, was a Michigan state legislator the first Democrat elected in his predominantly Republican county since the Civil War. Mrs.

JIMMY HUDSON, 56, of Memphis, formerly of McKenzie, BERNICE CATHERINE 'BEE' GANTERT, 83, of Bozeman, tration group called the Civic Research Committee. Years later, she recalled knocking on doors to find any unregistered voters and encountering women who said they did not believe it was proper for women to vote. Mrs. Awsumb ran for the State House in 1956, winning the GOP primary before losing in the general election.

When civic leaders looked at consolidation of city and county government and then a restructuring of city government, Mrs Awsumb served on the charter committee that recommended the city's current mayor-council form of government. 1967 elections to fill those newly created positions, she was elected to the District 2 seat, the only woman on the maintenance worker, died Wednesday at his home. Two months after the council members took office, sanitation workers went on strike, thrusting the new city leaders into the intense confrontation between the union representing the workers and Mayor Henry Loeb. What started as a labor dispute took on a life of its own, releasing decades of pent-up racial ills that were often aired at tense City Council sessions and in marches ending at City Hall. The strike brought Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. to the city, where he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Decades later, Awsumb said she felt "sadness and rage that it happened in our town." "I just felt like there was some way we could have avoided it. Let's work for things that made us great in the first place." Mrs. Awsumb ran for election to an at-large council seat in the 1971 city elections and won. She resigned from the council in 1975 when Mayor Wyeth Chandler appointed Tenn.

Mr. Richardson, the husband of Judie Faye Richardson, also leaves five daughters, Consandra Thompson and Kandi Gray, both of Memphis, and Sharon Brown, Goldie Brown and Audrey Brown, all of Milwaukee; five sons, Darrell Maclin of Memphis, Danny Richardson and Jimmy Brown, both of Milwaukee, David Brown of Miami, and Shepard Pitchford of Fort Knox, 20 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. She served in that post through 1981. During her 14-year run in city politics, Mrs. Awsumb was frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for mayor, but she never ran. She took up golf after leaving city government, serving as president of Galloway Ladies Golf Club. Mrs.

Awsumb quipped that golf and politics were alike because success involved shooting straight. Mrs. Awsumb took up the political challenge again in 1995 when she was appointed to the Shelby Farms Board, serving five years as chairman before retiring in 2000.
