mereial sign companies Among projects tied up by the strike is a $30000 job painting 17 wards at Western State Hospital Bolivar Tenn Another is completing the interior painting at Jefferson Pa-villion formerly Isolation Hospital as living quarters for 55 resident doctors and interns at John Gaston Hospital There are three days work still to be don in the Pavillion Interior painting of the new Park Tower Apartments 57 Somerville also has stopped which may delay some tenants who had planned to move in this week Work was stopped on the new negro school at Woodstock and in the Chrysler rooms of the Edway Building Contractors say however that the painters caught them in a lull period and not too much work has been stopped There is no picketing of commercial projects as no efforts have been made tonight Actually the sign painters and the house painters as the commercial painters are called are in the same local but have different bargaining committees Malcolm Futhey union business agent is on both commit-tees and is the key man 1 Futhey refuses to discuss the strike against the paint contractors at all but discussed thesign strike He said there was an agreement not to publicize the other matter John Parish of John Parish Sons painters is chairman of the bargaining committee for the contractors He also declined to discuss the matter because of the "gentlemen's But The Press-Scimitar learned the facts anyway 267 Out There are 267 commercial painters idle because of the general strike against the contractors They have been out since the contract expired May 10 Parish who has the Bolivar contract is negotiating for 20 big paint contractors who are members of the Memphis Chapter Two other contractors not members are waiting for a settlement and will go along with the Chapter members Futhey who ran for city commissioner on the Watkins Over-ton ticket last year has signed nine small contractors These are all men who still have their union cards and employ a total of about 25 painters Contractors say Futhey is trying to sign them individually instead of as a group but that none of the chapter members have agreed to this Futhey said only 50 painter and helpers are on strike at the sign companies Others say there are more Roseberry said he learned that 419 painters are on strike including 267 commercial and 152 sign painters The painters get a minimum of $256ii cents an hour They asked an increase of 15 cents an hour The contrators offered 125 cents an hour increase Not Really the Money A contractor said it really the money that the contractors probably would meet the 25 cents an hour they are apart He said Futhey just wouldn't bargain any more with the chapter There also was a difference about the size of hrushes used by painters and the way
