style in impresario Bill Special Event Entertainment version of Stop the World I Want to Get Off (PG) which opened yesterday at the Paramount It IS the Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley musical hit Sammy is doing in this filmed-live-in-the-theater offering even though the ads identify it as Sammy Stops the World The egocentric re-titling is appropriate though because what Davis has done is dilute I might even say pollute the inseparable blend of form and content As it was conceived and as Memphians saw former Memphis actor Ken Zimmerman do it first at Memphis State in the and again at Front St Music Theater in 1972 a tattered mime appeared under a single light on an uncluttered raked stage He writhed irresolutely until a tentative shoot of mood took root in his mind and began to grow into a meaning It was birth he was miming the unfolding of a new life from the womb and the birth of wonder and hope The character of Littlechap was created before our eyes and the play and a whole world seemed to take shape from the tips of his expressive fingers Birth led inevitably to childhood childhood to adolescence and graduation graduation to ambition and girls and marriage to the daughter and so on until the whole life cycle was completed and had begun again For all its cynicism and its sadness asking finally "What Kind of Fool Am Stop the World in its original unadulterated form is a joyous affirmation of life concluding that the mime is worth the gesture and the dumb show of life worth the playing THE DAVIS VERSION done without the mime is merely a dumb show with scenes pointlessly juggled and re-jiggered in the editing Even cut to an hour and 35 minutes it seems interminable Sammy can sing of course no disputing that But he has done the fine songs in the Bricusse score so often that he is no longer content to sing the melodies Instead in the musical paroxysm he makes of Build a and even in the haunting Kind of Fool Am he improvises his own tunes just as he improvises much of his own dialogue all of which makes his English Everyman Littlechap a little cheap As Evie his wife and all the other women in his life the estimable Marian Mercer of New York cabaret and revue fame is left somewhere out in left field most of the time while Davis determinedly dominates the stage Instead of mimetically and balletically peopling world as was done in earlier productions the attractive chorus writhes repetitiously through the same disco-style dance-steps whenever Sammy deigns to share the spotlight with them 1 stuck it out to the end but I must admit that I wanted to get off long before this sorry version of Stop the World stopped MSU Calendar Updated MEMPHIS STATE UNIVERSITY THEATER has updated its theater calendar for the season after several
